Bishops Garden at Beziers Cathedral

The Bishops' Garden Beziers Cathedral is my intimate exploration of an historic landscape within my Languedoc series following my life in Béziers, France. This large-scale 36" x 24" acrylic on canvas interprets the Bishops' historic garden sheltered by the ancient stone cathedral, and channels the emotional spontaneity in the style of DeKooning Abstract Expressionism. The composition relies on a tense, elegant interplay of organic pinks, soft lavenders, and deep moss greens, cut through with energetic white drips and charcoal-like calligraphic linework.
The soft lavenders and organic pinks draw the eye in to the secluded sacred garden. This tranquility is disrupted by the heavy moss greens and sharp, charcoal-like linework, suggesting a deeper feeling of historical weight. The energetic white drips act as fractures of light across the memory, triggering a poignant realization of beauty thriving amidst ancient, enduring stone walls, intensely alive with the secrets of regional history.
